HCSO hires 99 Detention Deputies!
Full Story KSTP
A record-setting swearing-in ceremony for the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is leading to a fully staffed agency and a major slowdown of millions spent to move inmates due to staffing struggles at the jail.
On Tuesday night, 28 licensed deputies and 99 detention deputies were sworn in by Sheriff Dawanna Witt — she said during the ceremony that brings the agency to 900 personnel.
“There were a lot of people who thought that we couldn’t get to this point,” Sheriff Witt told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. “Here we are, fully staffed with still room to grow.”
The agency’s staffing shortage in the jail created unique challenges, including the relocation of hundreds of inmates to other jails.

NBC News is reporting that a CO shot six times is pushing to get cell phone jammers in prisons.
Robert Johnson was a corrections officer whose job it was to prevent inmates from smuggling cellphones, drugs and other contraband into one of South Carolina’s most violent prisons.
But then came the morning of March 5, 2010.
Johnson was inside his home, preparing to head into work at the Lee Correctional Institution, when a hitman kicked in his front door and shot him six times in the chest and stomach.
Miraculously, Johnson survived. He hoped to return to work after multiple surgeries, but it eventually became clear to him that the damage to his body was too extensive.

Hennepin County to open new Juvenile Center
KSTP is reporting that
Juvenile crime in Hennepin County, similar to most other metro counties, is witnessing an increase in juvenile crime.
Hennepin County Commissioner Jeffrey Lunde told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the county is on schedule to open a new facility for juveniles in South Minneapolis by the end of the year.
Lunde said the $20-million renovation project will have between 14 and 16 beds with specific goals.
“You know we’ve been waiting for beds all over the state, right? So, this allows us to bring kids in —stabilize them and find out kind of what their acute needs are,” said Lunde.
